A masterpiece of minimalist filmmaking, James Benning's Sogobi is the equivalent of watching a living, breathing, photograph. Named "Earth" in Shoshone, the film consists of thirty-five static glimpses into the California wilderness and countryside. The diegetic sound envelopes the viewer into a world undisturbed by industrial human presence, only to then confront them with the disruption that settler colonialism has caused. Sogobi functions as a meditation on the stillness and oxymoronic complex simplicity of existence, and reflects back to us our relationship with the natural world.
