Death by Hanging, 1968
Dir. Nagisa Ōshima
Programmed by Eugene
Language: Japanese
Runtime: 84 min
Format: DCP
Death by Hanging stands as a historical testament to post-war Japan’s reckoning with capital punishment and systemic racism. As a Korean-American, Japanese and Korean relations have always been an interest of mine and I feel that this film highlights an important discussion of the complicated relationship that continues to persist between these two ethnic groups. I hope that this screening will enlighten those who are unaware of this relationship and to potentially spark a conversation about the nuances of the Asian diaspora as well as the intricacies of state-sanctioned violence and persecution
