When single mother Keiko (You) suddenly disappears to live with a new spouse, her four children are left to fend for themselves. Woefully unequipped to navigate the challenges of adult life, preteen Akira Fukushima (Yuya Yagira) struggles to take care of his younger siblings. Nobody Knows provides a caring examination of family love, the tragic realities of modern life, and the beauty of everyday pleasures despite desperate circumstances. Following the themes explored in My Life As A Dog, Nobody Knows depicts the complexity and depth that children possess. Considering these two films as spiritual companions will hopefully elevate their significance and value. Children are remarkably adaptable and given even the direst of circumstances, somehow manage to find opportunities to laugh.
