I Wake Up Screaming is a perfect film for the dreary winter in Portland. Carole Landis stars as Vicky Lynn, a glamorous starlet who’s been murdered. The police suspect that she was killed at the hands of her manager, Frankie Christopher, played by the handsome Victor Mature. Vicky’s sensible sister Jill (Betty Grable) isn’t so sure that Frankie is the murderer. The more time Frankie and Jill spend together, the more they fall for one another. Meanwhile, the head detective of Vicky’s case develops a morbid obsession of punishing Frankie for a crime he may not have committed. The lighter scenes in this film are counterbalanced by darker scenes filled with noir-esque, low-key lighting, creating the perfect pessimistic atmosphere. Featuring a small performance from Elisha Cook Jr., a brilliant character actor who starred in other notable film noirs such as The Killing, The Maltese Falcon, and The Big Sleep. Find out who killed Vicky and watch this thrilling mystery unravel on 35mm while escaping the cold winter in our warm theater.
