In his first foray into dark fantasy and departure from the Muppets, Jim Henson created a cult classic with The Dark Crystal. Co-written and directed with Frank Oz, this “family film” which brought nightmares to parents and children alike follows the adventure of two surviving members of an elf-like race, the Gelflings. Jen and Kira attempt to defeat the Skeksis, enslavers of the Podlings and antagonists to the archetypal “good” Mystics. Henson masters his skill of puppeteering and narrative, unafraid to explore mortality in a children’s film and create an adversarial evil that poses a real threat to Jen and Kira’s success.
