Christopher Nolan’s curated selection of the Quay Brothers’ experimental stop-motion shorts is a four piece introduction to the uncanny, surrealist worlds that Timothy and Stephen Quay have finely crafted. In Absentia (2000), The Comb (1991), and Street of Crocodiles (1986) are broken up by an eight minute documentary of Nolan interviewing the brothers in their studio. The pair, trained under Jan Svankmajer, turn sets of miniatures into haunting worlds suggestive of long-repressed childhood memories or dreams. Beautiful but troubling explorations of the world through the eyes of (in)animate objects, our minds half asleep, and visualized abstractions of thoughts in sepia and black and white.
