A greatly under-seen piece of Neorealist American Cinema, Nothing But a Man is an upstanding documentation of a young black man's life in segregated Alabama. Ivan Dixon plays Duff who falls in love with local schoolteacher, Josie (Abbie Dixon). Their relationship is tested with the racism that they encounter and the complexity of familial dysfunction. Roemer criticizes and highlights the American legacy of racism, Jim Crow policies and the segregation that is always relevant and plays an important part in our current political climate. We are incredibly honored to share this piece of cinematic history in 35mm, see for yourself how well the more subtle moments hold up, and how truly gifted these actors are.
