“This ain’t my first time at the rodeo!” growls Joan Crawford, portrayed by the effervescent Faye Dunaway. Mommie Dearest is a docudrama turned cult classic inspired by a salacious exposé. The film depicts the childhood of Joan Crawford’s adopted daughter Christina Crawford and the abuse she endured at her hands. Due to it’s bizarre script, over-the-top acting from Dunaway, and nonsensical plot, it would be more accurate to label the film as an unintentional comedy. Dunaway’s chilling interpretation of the actress makes this film fitting to watch during the month of October. Featuring quips such as “No wire-hangers, ever!” and “Ah, but nobody ever said life was fair, Tina”, it is nearly impossible not to laugh at the absurdity of the whole production.
