Inspired by Krzysztof Kieslowski's film Blind Chance, Run Lola Run takes a similar approach to unconventional narrative structures. Through its masterful use of editing we follow the story of a small-time criminal, Manni, who has left a bag full of money in a subway train. Instead of following one linear narrative, the story follows Lola on three runs in which she attempts to meet Manni and help him get the money back, with each run producing a different outcome. Director Tom Tykwer brilliantly includes flash forward sequences that show how each run impacts both Lola’s life and the lives of those she encounters. The feeling of the 90’s is evoked through the film’s use of animation sequences and electronica score. The cinematography is lush, the script engaging and complex, and the editing suspenseful and exciting, making for a film that is compelling beyond the novelty of its structure.
