Like Spike Jonze’s previous films Adaptation and Being John Malkovich, he philosophically investigates an aspect of the human condition within Her that is relevant to all of us —— the unconventional ways that we find love. Possibly one of the most innovative and thought provoking love stories of the 21st century, Her tampers with the barriers of most human conceptions of love. A story of a man named Theodore (Joaquin Phoenix) falling for an advanced piece of artificial intelligence, Samantha, voiced by Scarlett Johansson. Jonze creates a world that is familiar, believable, and not far off. Drawing inspiration from the philosopher Alan Watts, the film asks us to contemplate ideas of the ‘self’, transcending human form, and the evolvement of consciousness. “A work of science fiction that is also a moving inquiry into the nature of love” (The Atlantic).
