Despite their quick production schedules and small budgets, Fassbinder’s films are nonetheless unrivaled in their depth and quality. Delivering on all cinematic fronts, his films match a clever and intentional visual style with explorations into the complex emotions and interactions surrounding human relationships. Beware Of A Holy Whore explores the attitudes and desires that rise out of a film crew’s boredom as they wait in a hotel for the start of production. Lacking a central protagonist, the ties between each character come to the fore for a film, as Fassbinder describes it, “about why living and working together as a group doesn’t function, even with people who want it to and for whom the group is life itself.” The Merchant Of Four Seasons focuses on Hans, a fruit seller whose family life is thrown into turmoil as a result of his ill health and ill temper. Steeped in Sirk’s influence, this film has the heightened emotions and dramatic acting for an alternative spin on classic melodrama.
