“You know Jorge, that is a terrible, terrible, terrible pitch but there's something here, something magical” stated producer Guillermo Del Toro, pushing Jorge R. Gutierrez into his first feature length film, The Book of Life. With his highly crafted introduction to Mexican culture, Gutierrez embraces his heritage and passions taking cues from both the Mexican tradition Dia de Los Muertos, and the Greek myths of Orpheus, a musician capable of charming everything around him. The former is a celebration of active remembrance, keeping those who came before us in our thoughts and keeping them alive through their stories. Two deities of death make a wager on the lives of three childhood friends, Manolo (Diego Luna), a romantic matador in competition with Joaquin (Channing Tatum), a military hero, for the affections of Maria (Zoe Saldana). Manolo finds himself on a mystical journey taking him through an exploration of self, working his way through the Worlds of the Remembered, the Forgotten, to return to his home, The World of the Living.
