Setting out to show that muses are still alive and well, director Agnes Varda creates an eccentric portrait of Jane Birkin in Jane B. par Agnes V. Interviews with Birkin about her past and current life are mixed with small vignettes wherein she takes on roles that either she or Varda are interested in creating. Filmed over the course of a year during which Varda camped out in Birkin’s home, the resulting film is like Varda’s sketchbook, arranged as a series of small screen-tests for Birkin to try out different roles and see how she feels in them.
In the midst of making Jane B. par Agnes V. another film was born out of the many roles the Birkin and Varda toyed with —— Kung-Fu Master (later titled Le Petit Amour) presents Birkin as a lonely, middle-aged woman who finds herself falling in love with a 14-year-old video game whiz. Varda does not simply rely on Birkin’s charisma here as other directors have, but shapes Birkin’s performance into one of an obsession bordering on pathology. Together, Birkin and Varda create a narrative that only they could demonstrate how a woman so parched of affection could normalize lusting after a teenager.
